Curator of Exhibitions

 Job Description        

SUMMARY Develop, implement, and maintain traveling, temporary, and permanent exhibitions through research, collection and interpretation of artifacts, as well as general maintenance and upkeep. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES • Research prospective still images, moving images (film), audio, artifacts, and documents in the museum archives for use in exhibits • Negotiate with donors and lenders to acquire artifacts in the permanent museum collection as well as those items on loan for special and temporary exhibition • Compose text for interpretive labels for objects selected for exhibition • Work with Graphics Department on exhibit graphics needs • Implement and utilize oral histories as relevant to exhibitions • Recruit and interview potential candidates for the oral history program • Inspect and insure all exhibition displays are presentable to the public and not in disrepair • Work with exhibit builders on exhibit fabrication and repairs as needed • Manage all traveling exhibitions • Serve on working committees and collaborates with other staff members in long-range planning • Assist with development efforts to research and write grants for exhibit and collection funding • Develop and implement new and better preservation and restoration techniques and assists in ordering appropriate materials for proper artifact care, storage and object file documentation • Answer inquiries from researchers and the public • Make presentations to the public about the Museum’s exhibits and collection • Work with Education Resources Coordinator to recruit volunteers and interns for development of special exhibitions • Supervise project volunteers and interns • Maintain a current knowledge of issues and best practices within the Museum field • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

 

 Qualifications        

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Bachelor's degree in History, Museum Studies (Museology), or field related to the collection of the San Diego Air & Space Museum, comparative work or education related to special temporary and permanent exhibits scheduled for the Museum, or comparative work experience BASIC KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED • Knowledge of aerospace history and technology and appreciation of relevance represented by the Museum collection • Knowledge of research methods, principles and procedures • Ability to analyze project requirements and prepare work estimates • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to deal effectively in a team environment • Strong ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing • Strong computer skills and knowledge, including, but not exclusive to, database management • Thorough knowledge of professional museum standards and ethics SPECIAL/ADVANCED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUESTED • Comprehensive knowledge of aerospace history and technology • Knowledge of records management principles and procedures • Knowledge and understanding of curatorial principles, methods, procedures, and techniques • Ability to compose scripts and conduct interviews for audio-video presentations • Knowledge of film production processes WORKING CONDITIONS Work may be performed in an office environment, museum environment or field environment. Moderate physical activity, requiring handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day. No or very limited exposure to physical risk. The Museum is a non-smoking, drug-free workplace.
