 Job Description        

The San Diego Hunger Coalition represents the voice of nearly half a million San Diegans who lack access to healthy, affordable food. SDHC leads a collective impact effort to build a more effective and interconnected system of food assistance resources. Through our research program we provide the foundational knowledge and data needed to convene and facilitate stakeholders in creating a collaborative plan to end hunger. To support these efforts we have begun building a data warehouse to analyze a great variety of datasets over multiple years and identify outcomes and opportunities for improving access to food assistance programs. We’re looking for an intern who can support our database development, testing, and troubleshooting. In addition, we are looking to build our capacity for creating interactive data visualizations and GIS maps. This position is designed for a creative, driven individual who is passionate about using data to help people and create a more equitable San Diego.



• Proficiency in data manipulation, cleaning and interpretation. • Familiarity with relational databases, and SQL language. • Experience using standard GIS software. • Skilled at creating compelling data visualizations using software such as Tableau. • Knowledge of R preferred. • Enthusiasm for using data to solve real-world problems • Close attention to detail. • Ability to work independently and take projects to completion. • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to a non-technical audience. • Effectively work as a member of a multidisciplinary team in a diverse, multicultural setting. • This internship position is unpaid, so intern must be receiving academic credit.


 Additional Information        

Responsibilities may include: • Developing, testing, and documenting database systems. • Obtaining datasets from websites and partner organizations • Processing data for inclusion in a relational database. • Creating data visualizations and GIS maps for research reports and website. • Attending programmatic and project team meetings.
