Advocacy/Case Management Intern

 Job Description        

The intern will assist the program coordinator with carrying out day-to-day operations for the Utility Advocacy Program (also known as the California Public Utilities Commission’s TEAM/CHANGES program). • The advocacy specifically focuses on consumers of telecommunications and utility companies and provides consumer advocacy to limited English proficient individuals and other often mar-ginalized groups. • The intern will be responsible for assisting with client cases, consumer education, and marketing and outreach efforts. Description of Duties Performed As Utility Advocate you will: • Call utility companies on behalf of the client, resolve their bill issues/disputes, and find every discount and incorrect charge possible on their client’s bills to ensure they are paying a fair amount on their bills. • Community outreach and seek partnerships with organizations to find potential clients. • Attend community events to educate and outreach to potential clients.

 

 Qualifications        

Commitment: This position requires a minimum of 4-10 hours per week, for a commitment of at least 3 months. Weekly time commitments are based on availability. Qualifications • Enjoy speaking to large crowds, networking, and outreach • Excellent phone demeanor and present themselves professionally in business meetings • Knowledge of San Diego, where and how to do outreach in this community • Detailed, thorough, and deadline oriented • A passion for serving refugees, immigrants, seniors, and limited English proficient individuals and other often marginalized and underserved groups. • Ability to juggle multiple responsibilities, and work in a goal-oriented team. • Skilled in Microsoft Office, Google Drive, and working with databases. • Excellent English writing ability. • Bilingual in Arabic, Farsi, Spanish, or other major language is a plus, but not required.

The Alliance for African Assistance assists refugees, immigrants, the economically challenged and underserved to become self sufficient members of their communities. In the United States, we help newly arrived refugees in the San Diego area adjust to American life and culture. In Uganda, we provide educational scholarships to children with limited opportunities.
