The Alliance operates a non-profit Thrift Store called Safari Seconds which is dedicated to assisting and supporting refugees in meeting their basic needs required to adapt to their new homes. Frequently, many refugees arrive in the United States with nothing more than the clothes on their backs. In addition to functioning as a typical thrift store, Safari Seconds helps to provide a wide selection of items such as furniture, mattress sets, appliances, clothing, and household items to help as they rebuild and begin their lives in the US.
Key Responsibilities:
•Help supervise Welfare to Work refugee clients with
ocustomer service
ooperating cash registers
oanswering phones
odesigning display tables
oorganizing and tidying clothing racks
ocollecting donations
oand gaining an overall experience in a retail setting
Impact and Sustainable Outcomes: Safari Seconds helps refugees access their basic living needs and also it also functions as an on-the-job training site for many of our refugees. Refugees receive training in sorting donations, stocking the sales floor shelves, and managing the sales register. It is a wonderful opportunity for them to learn how to work within a retail store environment.
Commitment: This position requires a minimum commitment of three months, with an expected time commitment of two to ten hours a week. Hours of operation are Monday-Sunday 10am-6pm.
Training and Support: This volunteer will receive training and support from the Thrift Store Manager as well as the Volunteer department.
Benefits: Through this experience the intern/volunteer will have the opportunity to tangibly impact the livelihood of the San Diego community. This position will develop skills in supervision and management in a retail environment. In addition, you will increase your job development skills and get to work people from diverse backgrounds.
