Director, Licensing

 Job Description        

Reporting to Sr. Director, oversees intellectual property licensing function at Salk. Directly maintains a docket of Salk investigators & oversees, mentors & assists Licensing Associates having primary responsibility for the remainder of Salk labs. Responsible for all IP arising from research performed at Salk, including patented inventions, tangible research materials and copyright protected materials. Builds personal relationships with faculty and scientific staff to provide training, encourage invention disclosures, & support participation in the IP protection and licensing processes. Suggests experiments that might better demonstrate commercial potential, improve patentability and/or strengthen other legal protection. Identifies potential collaborations with other academic institutions & companies to enhance research programs and provide translational opportunities that may advance commercialization. Evaluates commercial potential of discoveries & availability of legal protection.



Education: Required: • Master's degree in a life science Preferred: • Ph.D. in a scientific discipline relevant to Salk research • Additional degrees or certifications in business, law, or science Experience: Required: • 8-10 years of experience in technology licensing, which includes successful management of other licensing personnel, responsibility for patentability and market evaluations, working with patent counsel and inventors on patent applications, identifying potential licensees and/or technologies for in-license, making first contact with potential licensees and/or licensors, and negotiating and drafting licenses and other contracts. Education may not be substituted for work experience. • Substantial experience drafting and negotiating complex contracts. Primary responsibility for at least ten executed exclusive licenses.

Special Requirements: • Must be willing to work in an animal-related research environment. • Must sign a confidentiality agreement. Regularly handles confidential information including proprietary technical and commercial information that has commercial value and conflict of interest potential. • Work location is located within close proximity to the Salk Institute, but not on the main campus. • Successful completion of the Institute’s background investigation. Physical Requirements: This position requires constant hearing, reading, reasoning, analyzing, communicating, and working inside. Licenses/Certifications: Patent Agent registration, and/or CLP or RPPT certification is preferred. If not a U.S. Patent Agent, must be willing to study for and take the Patent Bar Exam as part of their training within one year of hire.
